The presence of both women and men in leadership is crucial for companies. Only in this way can we consciously manage the energy that becomes helpful at the right moment.

Welcome to today’s discussion with Petra Fuskova. Petra is COO at Mondelez European Shared Service Center and a professional coach.

Petra Fusková, COO at Mondelez, during MENITY Leaders Talk (2014–2016), discussing diversity and leadership performance.

Q: Studies show that female leaders exhibit certain leadership behaviors that positively affect company performance. What is your view?

I agree. Female leaders often exhibit a distinct type of leadership behavior, which positively impacts the company’s performance. The difference lies in perception, which varies between women and men. Based on my experience, I can say that successful women in leadership are primarily concerned with building trust and effective communication. Gaining trust opens many doors, and communication is a key ingredient. To conduct a conversation – transparent, honest, and open – is something we are increasingly lacking as leaders.

Q: Markets are changing, as well as customer behavior. New technologies are emerging, and businesses require new types of leaders. What can leadership behaviors expect from future leaders?

I perceive the “leader” with respect. Those I have met are leaders because of their character, their actions, and their integrity. Many studies define a leader’s behavior. I think it is helpful to test the environment and the people element that highlight the profiles of future leaders. And let me dream a little bit – modern leadership should focus on both value and human development.

Q: To innovate, many leaders favor a “participatory” leadership style. What benefits do you see for organizations in this style?

Above all, practicing a “real” participatory leadership style requires a great deal of openness and confidence in the abilities of others. It requires a lot of energy and courage – to listen, to explain, to follow up, and to strengthen. This style creates new potential, even for the youngest employees. We can encourage them to implement their ideas and support their desire to contribute. Simultaneously, organizations can increase the company’s culture and reputation. It is about us – how many of us would prefer following other leaders instead of having the opportunity to express ourselves?

Q: How do you perceive the impact of diversity and cultural differences on company performance?

I am fortunate that my own experience comes from a very diverse environment. At the same time, I believe that diversity is a key asset that a company can leverage to its advantage. I dare say that not promoting diversity increasingly closes opportunities for many firms, and in some cases, success. The diversity of measures brings possibilities and happiness. The new generation of employees seeks new opportunities. Yes, diversity often comes with complexity, but it is also a good investment in the long run.

Q: How to prepare leaders to be ready to embrace diversity?

Probably it is not to interpret anything else or new. As a basis, we need to explain to leaders clearly what diversity means today, what we care about, and what meaningful value it brings. Leaders need to ask themselves fundamental questions. Then leaders work with the potential of diversity in their organizations and thus integrate it. And how to find motivation for diversity? While leading the company, they take a moment to think about the value that diversity can bring, not only personally, but also to the organization. Quite the opposite – what are we losing in a currently homogeneous environment?

Q: You are a successful female leader. How do you balance work and family life?

To see meaning in what I do, a value, and above all, a smile and a good feeling. These are all inspiring factors for me. Such work charges me with positive energy. And how do I keep my balance? It is essential for me that what motivates me the most is still present. If my work loses its added value, then balance will come second. Of course, family is the foundation. In those strong moments, I think of family. At the same time, I try not to forget to plan rest.

Q: Often discussed topics include that female and male leaders might have a different approach to leadership. Please share your experience with us.

I confirm that the presence of women and men is crucial for leadership and will be essential for companies. Because only in this way can we consciously manage the energy that can be helpful at the right moment. Women add authenticity and passion, men bring practicality. Together, it creates balance..

Thank you, Petra.
